You created something unique and new!" - Felix Wedel "It is more helpful than any other tool I've used. I had been using podcasts before and trying to make flashcards, and that worked pretty well. But, it ended up that I was spending more time making the flashcards than studying. FluentU really solves this." - David Brown "FluentU has quickly become one of my favorite language-learning tools. Great job on an aesthetically pleasing app and an incredibly functional one." - Justin Price "This concept in FluentU is amazing. It's such a great way to help you understand a spoken language and the way you break it down is amazing." - Demi Pradolin "This app is so fun and useful - the best Chinese language learning app I've ever used." - Richard Jun Learn a language with music videos, movie trailers, news, and inspiring talks. • Great if used correctly

This app gives you many advantages that others don’t, but it can feel overwhelming to beginners. A few tips: 1) Study the tones first. Train yourself to hear the tones and see if you can type the pinyin on your keyboard based on what you heard. Mimic the tones you hear. This app speaks them very slowly at first so you can hear the tone, then repeats it at a normal pace. DO NOT study with pinyin because you will use it like a crutch and it will really slow down your character recognition pace. 2) Do one playlist per day, don’t go crazy. Language learning isn’t a race, it’s not even a marathon; it’s a lifelong commitment. If you learn even 10 words per day and you learn them very well, then by the end of a year you will at least have basic conversational fluency. Learning 20, 30, 40 words per day will test your memorization ability, but it won’t improve your language skill. 3) Open your mouth! Repeat the words you hear in the exercises. If you’re not doing this, you’re skipping a very important exercise of these lessons. In the “audio” portions of the lessons, let it run and repeat a few times while repeating the words each time. They’re usually less than a minute, so it goes quick. Aim for 7-10 repeats before doing the quiz.

FluentU has all the right tools to help learn to understand spoken French.
  • Loving it so far

I’ve only started with the app and have some basic Japanese from other apps and self study as well as a full version of Rosetta Stone. This has been by far the most user friendly. Rosetta Stone is brutal where FluentU is gentle and fun while still teaching you. The ability to see the kana, kanji and romaji is brilliant. Once you get your kana memorized well, you can turn off the romaji. I have high hopes for the long term of this app combined with formal college classes. I don’t think any single app or class will get you to a competent level. It is the combination of several methods and live practice with a native speaker if possible will get you there. I see this as being a solid foundation to build off of.

Been spending a lot of time studying Japanese with FluentU. The beginner lessons are great. Well worth doing alongside another program. Now I’m in the open waters of intermediate which more self-directed and a very different experience. We’ll see how that goes.

  • Most useful

This is currently the most useful AND interesting Japanese learning app for me right now. If it weren’t for this app, I would be reading off song lyrics and short stories and translating them myself so it’s nice to have this app make things more convenient for you. Price is a little steep compared to others. I wish they had a 6 month plan too. Also, would be good to have a way to request translation of certain videos that we like. For example, I really like the learning from the LINE OFFLINE series and would like to request more of it but there’s currently only 5 of them! :( Anyway thanks for putting this together, team!

The app is good, but there's a lot of words that the pronunciation is very hard to understand 'cause the sound is very robotic.
  • Way Too Expensive for Sub-Par Quality

Very expensive for what you get. I’m already spending $15/month on this plan, and there are only a small handful of videos available in Japanese and I can’t even access all my flashcards unless I shell out another $5/month. Kind of a ripoff. Also, the UI isn’t great, I often have to start my entire video over from the begin when scrolling back to the videos from the “add to flashcard” deck screen. I wasn’t going to write a review, but since they kept asking me to write one from the main screen every time I logged in, here it is.

I recently purchased the Mandarin course from FluentU and was using it on the internet until I switched to the app. What a huge difference, and suddenly everything was a piece of cake. The way the app is designed is so you can not only work on the video at hand but instant Mandarin dictionaries pop up at the tap of a finger on a word you want to learn, AND related sentences then pop up that let you expand on the word you are tapping to learn. You can intuitively get back to the video any time. With their app, everything is intuitive and just where you need it. To the team at FluentU, thanks for putting in the extra effort. UPDATE: this app has no flaws, and it is VERY SOPHISTICATED, even going so far as to correct you if you make a mistake by pointing out “you typed _ _ _ “ if you type the wrong answer. I do have one request, and I’m hoping that the developers can address this. When you click on a word a dictionary pops up immediately, and below that SEVERAL sentences containing the same word that you are trying to look up. The problem is that none of the words in the new sample sentences can be clicked on to find out their meanings. As a result it’s great to see the meaning of the word you are trying to find out in the pop up dictionary, but none of the words in the new sample sentences below can be looked up in the dictionary. You can’t click on them. Otherwise I still give this app 5 stars all the way. Personally I wish I could give it 10 stars, it’s that good ADDITIONAL UPDATE: this app can read my mind!! I made a very small mistake on one of the tone marks because I was typing in a hurry and even though the app let me pass on that part of the quiz, the app still reminded me to “pay attention to the ā because I typed á instead!! I’m so addicted that I have been studying between 5 and 7 hours on FluentU daily now!!! The results are amazing!!! Besides all of this, the videos are so addictive, it makes learning all the more easier. You’re able to get right in the middle of the conversation between two or more people in the video and learn so much. For so many years while I was studying Mandarin I was wishing that there was a way to listen up close to people talking on the street and this is it!! FluentU makes that wish a reality with their videos
  • Great idea, needs work

I want to use it but the robotic text to voice is too jarring, making the listening comprehension exercises too frustrating. Other rough edges make make this app fall short of its potential and much shorter in value compared to the price for subscription.
