We have met a lot of new clients on here but we have spent a lot of money on people who didn’t hire us but messaged us. I think it shouldn’t charge me til we are hired.

We were early adopters of thumbtack and even won the first contractor awards the company put out. We received great, inexpensive leads and drew almost 85% of our general contracting / remodel business from Thumbtack. Then, the company changed somehow. Since about a year or so ago the lead quality has suffered dramatically and the prices have gone through the roof. It now takes us 3 X the leads to close the same number of deals at four times the pricing vs. our earlier experiences. We now only get a very small portion of business from thumbtack and only consider it an ancillary source now. Not sure what happened but I sincerely wish thumbtack would go back to the basics that allowed them to grow so quickly

This is a great way to generate solid leads. Not to many leads leading just surfing for pricing! Must be proactive. Great service, no complaints here!!

Of all of the avenues I’ve used for getting gigs in my profession, Thumbtack has been, by far, the most effective, reliable and profitable. The customer service Is always helpful and responsive and they always seem to be looking for new ways to improve their service to professionals. I would say that 90% of my gigs come through Thumbtack and I will happily continue to use the service.

I've only signed up a week or so ago and I've already gotten booked twice. I love that you only get charged when you send a quote and you can choose when to send it after you see what the customer is looking for. Barbara W. Photography

The good: I believe the customer support is great. They’ve been helpful and friendly for all my interactions with them. However, the phone reps seem to be limited on their scope of solutions. One thing I like is that if a requester has not viewed your bid/quote within 48 hours you’d get a refund. The bad: Over the last few weeks (December 2017) the company seems to be changing quite a few things. Examples: at one time the user (business end) could see how many other companies have bid/replied to a request. That’s no longer, there was a credit system that gave gave value for advanced purchases...that’s no longer. The bid system is no longer allowing my sector to request more information before stating a price to your end user. It’s a roll of the dice on the price which isn’t fair to the client nor the company if a number of factors were missed in the requesting phase. The ugly: over the past few months (December 2017) I’ve noticed there have been fake customers/requests. One example is fake client wanting to meet me at a house that wasn’t theirs. This was a big waste of fuel and time. Another bit of ugly is that a customer can leave a negative review on a company that they’ve not done business with. With that, the Pro can’t leave feedback about clients...this to me would help other pros before they travel down a bad road. Uber allows drives to leave feedback; this would make sense here too. My company had an interaction with a customer that leaned towards the racist side of the scale and left feedback that reflected their poor values. When I spoke to Thumbtack about this the reply we got back was “I’m sorry but we can’t help with that”. To me if your company can’t square things like that up then you’re encouraging behavior that’s not appropriate for business. In summary: I believe that the young company is still finding out who they are and what exactly they want to be. But at the end of the day the real customers are the people paying to use the service. I’d like to see them take care of the pros in a manner that’s more becoming of anyone in business. I wish them and the next pro well but for us we’ve I’ve suspended almost all funds toward them.
